Gizem Aksu is an independent choreographer, dancer and instructor based in Istanbul. She graduated from the Department of Political Science & International Relations, Bosphorus University and from the Department of Contemporary Dance, State Conservatory in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University with honor degrees. She currently continues Proficiency in Art Programme and also teaches at Contemporary Dance Department.
Her works approaches the body as a site of interrelations between art, politics and philosophy. In 2015, she was invited by Transcultures/Park in Progress Residency in Mons to create (e)scape! and she performed in Mons’ta Nuit Européenne de la Jeune Création. Its workshop version was realized in Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space 2015. In the summer of 2015, the artist has participated in ImPulsTanz-Vienna International Dance Festival with the support of the danceWEB fellowship. She also participated to Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design&Space (2015), 26.International Istanbul Art Fair (2016).
Recently, she has invited by AADK Spain to create a collective work for Festival Cumplicidades,Lisbon in March and her last solo,YU will be premiered at Toneelhuis in April.In May, she would participate to Mardin Biennial. She organizes different workshops, “How the Landscape My Body is?”, “Daily Rituals for Rebellion”, “Organic Wisdom” and bodily awareness workshops for LGBTQI+ people. Besides her own works and researches; as a dancer, she has worked with renowned choreographers; Aakash Odedra (UK), Ann Van den Broek (Ward/ward)(BE), Aydın Teker (TR), Marc Vanruxt (BE), Sharon Hayes(US), Tijen Lawton (BE), Tuğçe Tuna (TR) in important festivals.
