Vilt (Kulav)

COPRODUCTION

Felt (Kulav) is a performative process in which Hüseyin Umaysız explores the connection between body, material, and movement. The project draws on the felt craft practiced in many parts of the world, focusing on repetitive and physically demanding techniques such as rubbing, beating, and flattening wool.

In February, the artist collaborated with felt master Kadir Karcı in Urfa, Northern Kurdistan, where he experienced a distinctive method: beating wool with the chest to clean, shape, and merge it with breath and rhythm.

This practice takes on a ritual dimension, transferring both physical memory and the felt maker’s “DNA” into the material. Felt invites audiences to sense the passage of time across geographies, as bodies engage in a process that slowly unfolds through rhythmic, repetitive movement.
